Level : Extremely
Tough
Duration : Sixteen Days (Inclusive of Travel Time)
Description : This
trek belongs to the extreme edition but we can make it somewhat easier
for you
by
dropping one of the high altitude passes along an alternative route. The easier alternative
route
does
not pass thru the Hemis national park but trails all along its periphery.
The trek starts at the village
of
Spitok
just two hours walk from Leh Airport. We will be allowing a days
acclimatisation at Leh
since
this trek
involves
a lot of high altitude trekking. From spitok the trail winds its way
along the banks
of
the singchan river to the village of Jingchan. At Jingchan we stop
for an overnight
halt/acclimatization
The following day we begin our ascent to Rumbak and Yurutse before
conquering the first of the
passes
Ganda La at 4920 mtrs.
At Ganda La you have fine views of the Zanskar range and distant summits
of
the
Himalayan range. From Ganda La the trail descends to the village of Shingo. From
Shingo the trail
passes
thru a
narrow
gorge whoose walls
are lined with willow, poplar and rose bushes that attract a lot
of
birdlife. Once out of the gorge the trail reaches the village of Skiu from where
we head for a side
trip
to the Zanskar gorge after a days rest. The trail thru the Zanskar gorge passes
thru the village of Kaya at
3350
mtrs loaded with apricot orchards. The trail continues until the Zanskar river.
On the return
from
Kaya the trail winds its way thru the villages of Narding, Chalak, Markha,
Umlung, Hankar,
Thochuntse.
Be
prepared for many stream crossings along the route. The trail from Markha
village to Umlung
passes
an impressive gorge and it also crosses the Markha river
at some point. Markha river can be dangerously
swollen at some points and so an alternate route that winds high above the river
may have to be
used.
The Hankar village (3980 mtrs) is the highest village in the Markha valley. From
Thochuntse the trail
heads towards Nimaling from where there is a quick side trip to the Kangyaze
base and back. Once
back
from Kangyaze the trail to Kongmaru La pass is clearly visible. At Kongmaru La
(5150 mtrs) there is a
birds eye view of the Indus Valley and Ladakh range. Bharal may be seen grazing
in the vicinity of
the
pass.
From here on the trail heads for the highest village of Chogdo (4000 mtrs) and
then to
Sumdo,
Martselang, Hemis. At Hemis we rest for two days before heading back
to Leh by bus.
